Dynasty Minature American Shepherds

Dynasty Miniature American Shepherds Co-ownership

All of our dogs live in our homes with us. In order to keep the number of dogs in our homes to a manageable number where each dog receives the love, attention, and training they need, we look to co-own some of our highest quality puppies with families of their own. All co-owns are by private treaty.

Only about 50% of any show/breed prospects are ever bred. If it is decided by the breeder that the dog has not matured quite as well as expected or if any of the testing done comes back less than satisfactory, the dog would be spayed or neutered at the cost of the co-owner and full ownership would be given to the co-owner. This also means that all testing required for breeding such as eye clearances and hip clearances are done by the co-owner of the dog.

In the case of a male, the co-owner family would agree to keep the dog intact for a minimum of 5 years and make him available to us as needed for breeding. We will either pick him up or ask for the owner to take him to the vet for collection and shipping of semen. All breeding costs would be covered by Dynasty Miniature American Shepherds. Further details would be in the co-own contract including the percentage of the stud fee given to the co-owners.

In the case of a female, the co-owner would agree to 2 litters to be raised either by the family or by Dynasty. A 3rd litter is optional and up to the co-owners as to whether they want to have her bred a third time or have her spayed after the 2nd litter.

It has been determined by the top veterinarian in the US for the breeding practices for dogs that it is better for bitch to be bred at 2 years old and then at 2½ years. It is better for her to not experience too many heat cycles as each one leaves some scar tissue in the uterus. This way a bitch could be retired by age 3. Of course with a female, the contract is a little more involved and would be detailed further including the percentage of funds given to the co-owner for each litter.

When the dogs are retired from the breeding program and spayed or neutered, full ownership would be given to the co-owner. We are currently only registering our dogs as Miniature American Shepherds.

We hold ourselves to a higher standard. All breeding stock have their OFA (Orthopedic Foundation of America) ratings (hip), eyes cleared and scissors bite. With all of the newly available DNA testing, many are also tested for extensive DNA results.
